JESSICA NAZARETH-LUCERO or “Jeng” as she is fondly called, is a homegrown empowered woman of MGB-IX.

A Geologist by profession, Ms. Lucero immediately began her career in the government service right after she graduated from Adamson University as an MGB Scholar in 1984. She rose from the ranks having started as a casual employee before holding her present position as Chief Geologist of the Geosciences Division (GSD) in 2005. As a recipient of a 9-month Netherlands Fellowship Programme, she earned her post-graduate course Diploma in Exploration Geophysics at the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences in Delft, the Netherlands in 1998.

Her exceptional passion and dedication to her job led to her appointment as OIC, RD of MGB-IX from 2007 to 2010. She was a staunch supporter of initiatives in conducting pro-active information, education and communication (IEC) activities that pushed for responsible mining advocacies in close coordination with the then Minerals Development Council. One of her legacies during her 3-year stint as OIC, RD was the creation of the Coalition for Responsible Mining in Mindanao (CoReMin2), which paved the way to a unified and collaborative vision of promoting responsible mining in Mindanao. She assumed her position again as Chief Geologist upon her return to MGB-IX in 2016 after her 6-year stay in MGB Region VII as one of the geologists in the said region. She is also the Chair of the Regional Gender and Development Technical Working Group (RGAD-TWG). As RGAD-TWG Chair, she makes sure that there is gender mainstreaming in the implementation of the region’s programs specifically GSD programs such as the Vulnerability Risk Assessment and other geohazard-related programs

Ms. Lucero is a widow and mother of three, two of whom are already married, making her a doting grandmother to her two grandchildren, Hailey and Aki. She is also the younger sister of the late DOST Undersecretary Brenda Nazareth-Manzano, who had been recognized by the Philippine Commission on Women as one of the powerful champions of women’s rights advocacies.
