Now on its 10th year, the Dia de las Mujeres, Zamboanga City’s way of commemorating the country’s annual observance of Women’s Month and International Women’s Day, had once again been successful and well-participated by different sectors in the city. Led by no less than the City Mayor herself, Hon. Mayor Ma Isabelle “Beng” Climaco, this year’s Dia de las Mjueres highlighted and recognized the strength and passion of our local women who are doing mostly what they call as a “man’s job”, such as being police officers, fire fighters, traffic enforcers and those serving at the Philippine Navy and Air Force. Mayor Beng, who champions women empowerment and transformation said that she believes that “women can make change happen” giving emphasis to this year’s theme “We Make Change Work for Women” an appeal for women to fulfill their calling as catalysts of change in their personal and professional lives.

The 2017 Dia de las Mujeres was held at the KCC Mall Car Park area where a Zumba session was done giving delight to the participants especially Zumba dance enthusiasts. But the highlight of the program was the presentation of 13 women hailing from different fields and professions who have initiated change in their lives, organizations, and in the community.

This annual event is spearheaded by the city’s Gender and Development Technical Working Group and the Local Council of Women, where a fund-raising campaign also highlights the event to aid victims of violence and injustice. Proceeds of the campaign usually goes to agencies such as Women’s Crisis Center, the Social Development Center, and the Women and Children desk of the Philippine National Police while a portion goes to the women inmates of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

MGB-IX’s annual participation had also increased in number especially male participants and are becoming more aware and appreciative of the different roles of women in our society.
