MGB-IX embedded personnel, Engr. Ventrick Ceasar Albano joined PENRO-B, DENR-IX personnel in the meeting for the proposed ordinances for the implementation of Zamboanga del Sur’s Comprehensive Environmental Management Plan on February 27, 2017 at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Session Hall. Spearheaded by the Office of the Provincial Governor, the meeting was attended by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Council members, the Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (LENRO) and representatives from national government agencies concerned such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and its line bureaus. 

Prior to the discussion of the proposed ordinances, Mr. Richard Ligan, LENR Officer, discussed the present conditions of the ecosystems in Zamboanga del Sur highlighting the different impacts which resulted from the illegal exploitation of the province’s natural and mineral resources. The proposed ordinances discussed in the meeting are:

  • Riverbed Management, Preservation, Protection, and Rehabilitation of Zamboanga del Sur; and

One of the major programs and activities under this ordinance is the riverbed rehabilitation through periodic desiltation, or the removal of sand and gravel materials to improve the channel or carriage way of water in the riverbed. However, the procedures on the proper disposal/utilization of the collected sand and gravel materials were not discussed in the proposed ordinance.

  • Tree planting and Tree Growing Activity of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur.

The Ordinance aims to combat the degradation of natural resources by undertaking province-wide tree planting activities and providing effective measures for their maintenance and sustainability.

Representatives from the DENR, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and other resource persons provided their inputs on the proposed ordinances formulated by the provincial government.
