The month of December may not be a relaxing time yet as the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-IX (MGB-IX) undertook few more major activities before the year end had capped off. These included the participation to an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign, Year-End Assessment and a GAD activity to culminate the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (eVAW).

Upon the invitation of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) IX in partnership with the Regional Public Affairs Office of DENR-IX, MGB-IX had participated in the Environmental Youth Summit held in Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur last December 11, 2018. Information Officer Emma Deverala and personnel from the Geosciences Division, Glenford Gamelo, served as resource persons as they each gave their presentation about responsible mining through sustainable development and geohazard awareness/preparedness respectively, to senior high school students coming from selected schools in Margosatubig.

Culminating the eVAW campaign, the Regional GAD Focal Point System-Technical Working Group of MGB-IX, thru its Chair, Chief Geologist Jessica Lucero, has initiated a one-day GAD activity last December 19, 2018 focusing on the role of women in the society and how violence against women can be prevented.  A brief lecture on planning and budgeting was also discussed among MGB-IX GAD advocates to educate them on the proper use of the 5% allocation for GAD activities as mandated by law. Ms. Ma. Luisa Barrios-Fabial and Ms. Jhamie Tets Mateo, who are GAD experts and accredited pool of GAD trainers served as resource persons for the day.

To discuss the status of accomplishments for the year, each division from the Finance and Administrative Division (FAD), Mine Management Division (MMD), Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD) and the Geosciences Division (GSD) have presented their accomplishments as against their targets during the Year-End Assessment held last December 20, 2018 at Astoria Regency. Their presentations disclosed that no target was unaccomplished despite the constraints encountered such as the limited budget and shortage of manpower in implementing demand-driven activities specifically those that involve complaints that need investigation and validation on field.

The successive two-day activity was facilitated/moderated by Info. Officer Emma Deverala who also recently graduated from her Master in Public Management major in Rural Development scholarship program of the DENR at the Development Academy of the Philippines, Tagaytay last December 17, 2018.
