With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office IX have responded and adhered to both local and national policy issuances. As such, OIC-RD Hernani G. Abdon has issued several Memorandum Orders supporting local Executive Orders of the City Government of Zamboanga strengthening the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 which eventually led to the declaration of an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) effective March 20, 2020, including issuances based on national orders.
In the Memorandum Order of MGB Director Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano dated March 27, 2020, Authorizing the Re-alignment of Unutilized Funds of the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) in order to support affected impact and non-impact communities due to COVID-19, RD Abdon immediately notified every mining contract permit holders and Industrial Sand and Gravel (ISAG) permittees within the Zamboanga Peninsula of the said memo for their compliance.
As a response and show of support, several mining companies have submitted their reports to this Office following the guidelines set forth in the recent Memorandum Order issued by Dir. Moncano dated April 1, 2020.
Atro Mining Vitali Inc. (AMVI), an Iron Project located in the Vitali District of Zamboanga City, is one of the mining projects in the region that have responded in the call of providing assistance to its host barangay. As early as March 26, AMVI personnel, in coordination with barangay officials, have already been distributing food packs containing 5 kilos of rice, canned goods, and instant noodles to 222 out of 234 target families. Their next batch of food packs distribution is scheduled next week to be distributed to their neighboring communities.
