After the more than six (6) months of ISO journey, the MGB-IX has finally declared ready to undertake the Stage 1 Audit, in our quest to be certified against the ISO 9001:2015 standards. With the facilitation of the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP)-Mindanao, through its project leader Ms. Thernalyn Perfecto and resource person, Mr. Antonio Santos, the MGB-IX had undergone a tough and thorough capacity trainings, to ensure that we follow and comply to the standards, in our desire to provide better services to our clientele.

The AJA Registrars Ltd. is a certifying body which the MGB-IX had select, after it has satisfied the Terms of Reference and fit in the ABC which the MGB-IX has posted in the PhilGEPS. Ms. Mercedelin Flores, AJA accredited auditor, had conducted the Stage 1 Audit on December 19, 2017. The whole day activity was very productive, interactive and promising, as the auditor, during the exit conference, gave positive feedback, citing few observations and recommended appropriate actions which the Office can take prior to the Stage 2 Certification Audit slated on January 7, 2018.

“Responsible Mining…in the Hearts and Minds of Filipinos”, is this year’s theme for the 64th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC). Mostly held in the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio City, different stakeholders of the minerals industry have gathered once again last November 21-24, 2017 at the CAP John Hay Trade and Cultural Center for different activities lined for the 4-day event.

Highlights of the ANMSEC include the 5th Community Relations’ Officers Conference and the Minerals Industry Symposium where Ms. Emma Rodelie M. Deverala, Information Officer of MGB-IX was one of the presenters. Her paper, co-authored by Roie-lee Cataluna, DVM of the National Meat Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture, is part of the research component of their Action Plan and Project paper, entitled “Institutionalization of the Convergence Area Development Plan: An engagement tool for poverty alleviation of the Subanen Indigenous People of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte. This paper is a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master in Public Management major in Rural Development (MPMRD) of the Development Academy of the Philippines, in consortium with Ateneo School of Government, University of the Philippines College of Social Work and Xavier University.

The MPMRD is a mechanism under the capacity building component of the Convergence Initiative framework to facilitate better governance of sustainable rural development by rural development oriented line agencies of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture and the Department of Agrarian Reform. Other major activities were the Minerals Industry Parade, Mine Safety Field Demonstration and Field Competition and the Testimonial Dinner/Annual Awards Night.

As part of the IEC campaign of the region in the promotion of responsible mining, the MGB-IX is continuously fostering partnership with various stakeholders, to include partnering with our mother department agency, the DENR-IX, whose IEC campaign efforts are intensified each time.

The Dalaw-Turo (DT) is an IEC strategy in order to generate awareness and advocacy among public and private high school students within the region. This is in pursuant to Republic Act No. 9512 or the " Act Promoting Environmental Education" and DepEd Order No. 72 Series of 2003, which mandates the establishment of the YES-O in all private and public elementary and secondary schools.

As part of the regular involvement of MGB-IX in the Dalaw-Turo session organized by the Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) of DENR-IX, Ma. Virna Baguio, SSRS, joined the DT Team once again in the conduct of IEC on DENR programs last November 13 and 14, 2017 in selected secondary schools in Pagadian City. This DT session is in line with environmental celebrations of the National Environment Month, National Clean-Air Month, National Climate Change Consciousness Week and the National Day for Youth in Climate Action, and is one of the many DT sessions undertaken this year.

Ms. Baguio gave lectures on the benefits of mining, giving emphasis to responsible mining and Geohazards awareness.
