In line with the proposed Mining Forum following the Regional Development Council-IX Resolution No. 063, Series of 2018, “Requesting MGB-IX to Conduct Regional Forum on Mining” to address mining issues and concerns in the region, particularly on the issue of scarcity of supply of sand and gravel and aggregates to respond to the Build, Build, Project of the current administration, the Economic Development Committee (EDCOM) of RDC-IX, during its 2nd quarter meeting on May 24, 2019, reiterated the need to undertake the said activity.  However, MGB-IX have conveyed its concern regarding budgetary requirements, since the said proposed activity have not been identified as a major activity thus no amount was specifically earmarked for the same purpose. Thus it was agreed during the said meeting that a Technical Working Group (TWG) be organized to address said concern and other similar concerns that may impede the conduct of the said forum. It was later proposed that a meeting among identified agencies that may have direct interest in pursuing the mining industry be conducted.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region IX (MGB, R-IX), together with various agencies such as Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Zamboanga City, Environmental Management Bureau, Region-IX (EMB, R-IX), the RIEC Sta Cruz Islandegional Focal Persons for GAD, Senior Citizen Affairs, Person with Disabilities and the Regional Youth Desk Officer conducted Information Education and Communication Campaign last April 23, 2019 at the Great Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City to commemorate its annual celebration of Earth Day. The said activity is in line with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) effort to consistently and continuously conduct environmental education activities to coastal communities to instill awareness towards environmental protection and conservation. Furthermore, this year’s Earth Day celebration carries the theme “Protect Our Species” with a thematic message #beatplasticpollution and #Ifyoucantreuserefuse. In addition, Presidential Proclamation 1482 was issued declaring the month of April as the Philippines’ Earth Month with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as the main convener.

Cruz Island, Zamboanga City last April 22-23, 2019. These activities were spearheaded by the RPAO-IX and joined by MGB-IX and CENRO-ZC personnel.

During day 1 activity, CENR Officer of Zamboanga City Pilarito Montebon gave an inspirational message emphasizing that “celebrating Earth Day is for the protection of the environment.” It was followed by the overview and launching of the flagship species for DENR-IX, which was the sting-less jellyfish, and was named Elly the Friendly Jellyfish. Afterwards, the inter-agency activity of coastal cleanup along the shoreline of the Great Sta. Cruz Island commenced.
