GSD Major field programs of the Geosciences Division (GD) commenced in February 2020 with the Coastal Geohazard Assessment in the Municipalities of Katipunan and Roxas in Zamboanga del Norte. This is for now the only major program that has been accomplished within the quarter prior to the temporary cessation of all field activities of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Region IX (MGB, R-IX) due to the heightened alert status as regards to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Enhanced Community Quarantine implemented within the provinces and cities of Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Groundwater Resource Availability and Vulnerability Assessment (GRAVA) and the Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA) and Updating of 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Map were undertaken on the 2nd week of March this year in the Municipalities of Salug, Zamboanga del Norte and Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay, respectively. However, these activities were not fully completed because all remaining GD field personnel conducting the activities were recalled by the Office on March 16, 2020 prior to the lockdown of incoming travels to Zamboanga City on March 17, 2020 at 1:00 PM.

Both the GRAVA and the VRA/ Geohazard Updating Programs were on the onset of their respective implementation when the instruction to head back to the Official Station in Zamboanga City was received. The Ground Subsidence Survey which was scheduled on March 17 to April 18, 2020 and targeted to be implemented in the Municipality of Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur was likewise suspended.

The field programs will likely recommence once the threat on the pandemic stabilizes. Thus, delay on the program completion is highly expected this year.
